The deadline for ITR filing has been extended from July 31, 2025, for the financial year 2024-25 (assessment year 2025-26)

New Delhi, May 27: On Tuesday, the Income Tax Department announced an extension of the deadline for filing income tax returns for FY 2024-25 (AY 2025-26) from July 31 to September 15. The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) made this decision to extend the due date for filing returns “in light of the significant changes made to the notified ITRs and taking into account the time needed for system readiness and the rollout of Income Tax Return (ITR) utilities for Assessment Year (AY) 2025-26,” as stated in an official announcement. The notified ITRs for AY 2025-26 have been revised both structurally and in content to simplify compliance, improve transparency, and facilitate accurate reporting. These modifications have required additional time for the development, integration, and testing of the related utilities. Additionally, credits from TDS statements, which are due for submission by May 31, are anticipated to start appearing in early June, which would limit the effective period for filing returns without this extension, according to the statement. This extension aims to address the concerns raised by stakeholders and provide sufficient time for compliance, thus ensuring the integrity and accuracy of the return filing process, the statement added. The CBDT had previously notified the income tax return forms ITR-1 and ITR-4 for the financial year 2024-25 and the assessment year 2025-26 on April 30.
