Bridge collapses during tourist rush
An aged iron bridge spanning the Indrayani River fell down at approximately 4 PM in the Maval tehsil of Pune, while it was reported that around 125 tourists were present on it. The event took place close to Kundamala, a favored weekend getaway. Intense rainfall in the days leading up to the incident had elevated river levels, potentially exacerbating the effects of the collapse.
Rising death toll and missing persons
Authorities initially reported two fatalities, a number that subsequently increased to four, while several individuals remain unaccounted for and are feared to have been carried away by the powerful currents. Approximately 20 to 25 people were allegedly thrown into the river. Search teams are currently operating downstream in an effort to find the missing individuals, despite challenging water conditions.
Bridge in poor condition
Authorities disclosed that the bridge was aged and in a state of disrepair, which raised alarms regarding its safety. Although there was no rainfall at the moment of the collapse, several days of intense rain had caused the river to swell. The structure collapsed under the burden of more than 100 individuals, underscoring the necessity for immediate inspections of such infrastructure.

Witnesses recounted moments of chaos as individuals plunged into the river. Residents promptly entered the water to assist, rescuing several victims prior to the arrival of authorities. Footage of the collapsed structure and the turbulent river beneath spread rapidly, heightening public anxiety and sparking inquiries regarding regulatory oversight.
PM Modi monitors situation
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is presently overseas, communicated with Chief Minister Fadnavis and received updates regarding the rescue operations. He conveyed his concern about the incident and guaranteed complete support from the central government. The Centre is vigilantly observing the situation as rescue efforts persist into the late evening.
Multiple agencies in rescue efforts
The NDRF dispatched two teams, whereas the CRPF sent one company to the location without awaiting instructions. Additionally, the fire department, police, and local residents collaborated in the rescue efforts. Rescue teams are utilizing boats, diving equipment, and specialized tools to explore submerged regions and control the crowd.
CM announces Rs 5 lakh compensation
Chief Minister Fadnavis declared a compensation of Rs 5 lakh for the families of the deceased. The government will also bear the full expenses for the treatment of the injured. In his public address, he conveyed his sorrow and assured prompt relief actions.

The event has prompted a review of infrastructure upkeep in areas frequented by tourists. Officials are expected to examine comparable bridges and implement new safety measures. The government has advised the public to refrain from visiting the location and to avoid conjecture while formal inquiries into the cause are in progress.
