Introduction to the Bypass Construction
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has taken a significant step towards protecting heritage sites by announcing the construction of a bypass around Gangaikondacholapuram along the Tiruchi-Chidambaram National Highway (NH 81). This decision comes in light of concerns raised by heritage advocates regarding the possible damage to the Sri Brihadeeswarar Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage site located in the Ariyalur district, due to vibrations caused by heavy vehicle traffic.
Details of the Project
Recently, the NHAI issued a tender for the bypass project, estimated to cost approximately ₹103.62 crore. The planned bypass will stretch 7.2 kilometers from Gangaikondacholapuram to Meensuritti along NH 81. This initiative not only aims to redirect heavy traffic but also ensures that the structural integrity of the ancient temple is preserved. Land acquisition for the new route will be necessary before work can commence, with expectations set for completion within 18 months.
Community Support and Heritage Preservation
The Gangaikondacholapuram Development Council Trust, led by R. Komagan, played a pivotal role in advocating for this bypass. The trust highlighted the risks that heavy traffic posed not only to the temple’s structural integrity but also to its rare inscriptions. Following appeals made to Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, a feasibility study was commissioned by NHAI, leading to the conclusion that the bypass is essential for safeguarding the site. This development marks a crucial step towards balancing infrastructure growth with the preservation of India’s rich cultural heritage.
