The southwest monsoon has arrived in Mumbai 16 days earlier than usual, making it the earliest occurrence since 1950, as reported by the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The main rain-bearing system hit Kerala on Saturday, which is its earliest arrival on the Indian mainland since 2009, when it reached the southern state on May 23. Typically, the southwest monsoon begins over Kerala by June 1, arrives in Mumbai by June 11, and covers the whole country by July 8. It usually starts to retreat from northwest India around September 17 and completely withdraws by October 15.
